It's been hard to get back into fandom and livejournal when LOST wasn't on, but now I'm back. Why? I have a new TV show to get excited about. It's Journeyman. And it's fantastic. Seriously, anyone that likes a little bit of science fiction and mystery in their shows needs to watch this one. It's not even so much about the time-traveling so much as it is about how it affects his current family life.
It's character driven and smart and has a lot of throw-away references that you need to be alert to catch. The show itself is beautiful and they do a lot with camera angles and lighting that blows me away. The end of the pilot is what really hooked me -- I'm all about production and everything came together with music, emotion, humour, and rain. Seriously, you need to watch this show. If I can help you watch this show in any way, I will. This includes sending disks with episodes.
Once the writers' strike is over, I really hope NBC orders the back 9 episodes and doesn't let it die. If the strike continues long enough, it may work in Journeyman's favour, though... when people get tired of CSI: Miami maybe they'll watch Journeyman reruns. What I'm really surprised about is that there's not more people hanging on from Heroes. That time slot is CURSED I tell you, CURSED. (Did I mention that Kevin Falls is the executive producer / creator / writer for the show? Remember him from West Wing and Sports Night? On that fact alone you should all watch!)
So, how was my sales pitch?
Now, for those that DO watch, some discussion.
Livia's secret
For the record, I totally called that Livia was not from Dan's time. The Friday before the Monday it aired I talked with my dad about it saying, "I have a serious crack-pot theory about Journeyman." Then, right before the show I told my theory to my mom and she asked for more details.
Me: Like... Livia's from the future.
My mom: or the past?
Me: Yeah, exactly. I don't know which, but I don't think she's from his time. Otherwise, why didn't she try to contact him, or somehow otherwise turn up? I don't think she can.
show starts
Me: ::starts bouncing:: I was right!
My mom: No, I was right. You said she was from the future.
Me: ...
Me: Whatever. I was totally right.
I wonder if it was more fun being right and bouncing excitedly, or being blown away and surprised.
Speculation, timeline, dates, and ages. Give me numbers.
Kevin McKidd was born in 1973, and Moon Bloodgood was born in 1975. Let's guess that their real ages are pretty close to the ages of the characters.
Assume Dan is 34 and Livia is 2 years younger than him, which makes her 32 in 2007.
We know that Zach is 7, and that Katie and Jack broke up over 8 years ago. We also heard Katie say that Dan lost Livia only a "year and a half ago" at the same time she told Jack she was pregnant. Let's assume that Livia disappeared 9 years ago.
She would have disappeared when she was 23, and Dan was 25. This would have been the year 1998. It's funny to think that at the engagement lunch that they were all in their mid-twenties!
She said that she had arrived in Dan's time in the late 1980's (though on the website it says mid 1980's). Assuming she arrives in 1988, she was 13 when she arrived in Dan's time. She also says that she had been traveling for a while before she stayed in Dan's time... yet, in that picture of her from 1948, she is definitely older than 13.
I'm wondering... does she age when traveling? Maybe she was always 23 in Dan's time. When she went back to her time, did she arrive when she left, but 10 year's older? In her time, was she gone for 10 years? Did she leave in 1929 and come back in 1939? Then, assuming that she was born in 1916, she would be 91 in Dan's time... probably not still alive, but he could find out about her life, maybe, or at least maybe decedents? Why doesn't he look her up?
How did she get an ID and social security number in Dan's time? I guess if she was only 13 then it wouldn't have been too hard to get absorbed into the foster home system...
I want to know more about Livia. I guess it's one of the things keeping me interested.
Sometimes being a science geek gets me into trouble in this show. Like when Elliot Langley was explaining what he was working on...
My mom: what did he say? Quartz?
Me: No, I think it was quarks. You know, sub-atomic particles that make up protons and neutrons... I think the other ones are called leptons. I guess it makes sense if he's also talking about tachyons. Somehow they work together..? ::ponders::
::we watch show. later on...::
My mom: See? Quartz! Like in watches! We are talking about time and time-travel here.
Me: ::facepalm:: That was not fair.
So, that's the end of my Journeyman ramblings for this week. Seriously. Watch this show.
And also, I'm so happy that I'm back into livejournal. I've missed everyone so much.
